WOULD RATHER là một mẫu câu phổ biến trong tiếng Anh giao tiếp để thể hiện sở thích, mong muốn của mình. Tùy nhiên, với những bạn mới bắt đầu “nhập môn” tiếng Anh giao tiếp, chúng ta chỉ biết các cấu trúc đơn giản như I like, I want… Vì vậy, hãy cùng Ms Hoa Giao Tiếp tìm hiểu cấu trúc would rather để “nâng cấp” cách thể hiện ước muốn của mình nhé!
I. SỬ DỤNG WOULD RATHER VỚI CÂU CHỈ CÓ MỘT CHỦ NGỮ
Trong câu có một chủ ngữ, WOULD RATHER mang ý nghĩa là thích… hơn. Ta xét mẫu câu would rather tại 2 thì hiện tại và quá khứ:

1. Ở thì hiện tại hoặc tương lai
Công thức:
| S + would rather (+ not) + V (infinitive) <+ than + V (infinitive)> |
Phía sau would rather phải là một động từ nguyên mẫu không “to” (bare inf). Nếu đó là câu phủ định, bạn chỉ cần thêm “not” vào phía trước động từ đó.
➥ Ví dụ:We would rather travel to Korea than Thailand.
Chúng tôi thích đến Hàn Quốc hơn Thái Lan.We would rather not travel to Korea.
Chúng tôi không thích đến Hàn Quốc.
We would rather travel to Korea than Thailand.
2. Ở thì quá khứ
Công thức:
| S + would rather (+ not) + have + V (past participle) |
Phía sau would rather phải là “have + P2”. Nếu đó là câu phủ định, bạn chỉ cần thêm “not” vào phía trước “have”.
➥ Ví dụ:I would rather have bought a shirt than a dress.
Tôi đã thích mua một chiếc áo hơn một chiếc váy.I would rather not have bought this shirt.
Tôi đã không thích mua chiếc áo đó.
II. SỬ DỤNG WOULD RATHER VỚI CÂU CÓ HAI CHỦ NGỮ
Trong câu có hai chủ ngữ, WOULD RATHER thể hiện mong muốn người khác làm một việc gì đó và được dùng trong các trường hợp sau:
1. Câu cầu khiến ở thì hiện tại
Ý nghĩa: Câu này thể hiện mong muốn ai đó làm gì tại thời điểm hiện tại. Động từ ở mệnh đề 2 để ở dạng nguyên thể không “to”. Với câu phủ định, chỉ cần thêm “not” vào phía trước động từ.
Công thức:
| S1 + would rather (that) + S2 + V (infinitive) |
➥ Ví dụ:I would rather that you come back to me.
Tôi muốn rằng anh quay về bên tôi.I would rather that you not come back to me.
Tôi mong rằng anh đừng quay về bên tôi.
2. Câu giả định trái về thực tế ở hiện tại
Ở mệnh đề thứ hai, động từ sẽ được chia ở thì quá khứ và “to be” luôn là “were” với tất cả các ngôi.

Henry would rather that his girlfriend worked in the same department as he does.
Henry mong muốn rằng bạn gái của anh ta làm việc trong cùng một bộ phận như anh ta.
3. Câu giả định trái về thực tế ở quá khứ
Động từ ở mệnh đề thứ hai được chia ở dạng quá khứ hoàn thành (past perfect).
Công thức:

Bob would rather that Jill had gone to class yesterday.
Bob mong rằng Jill đã tới lớp ngày hôm qua.
Bob would rather that Jill hadn’t gone to class yesterday.
Bob mong rằng Jill đừng tới lớp ngày hôm qua.
Lưu ý: Trong giao tiếp hàng ngày người ta dùng WISH thay cho WOULD RATHER THAT.
